The Urban Grill

The Urban Grill — Urbandale's Beloved American Dining Destination

Tucked along 86th Street in Urbandale, The Urban Grill has been one of the Des Moines metro's most trusted neighborhood restaurants since May 2002. Founded by longtime hospitality veteran Skip Bachman — whose roots in the local bar and restaurant scene stretch back to the mid-1970s — this family-run American grill carries more than two decades of genuine Des Moines character within its walls. Today, under the ownership of general manager-turned-proprietor Dave Thompson, the restaurant embodies everything locals love about a true community dining destination.

The menu reads like a love letter to bold, satisfying American cuisine. Guests rave about standouts like the Blackened Seafood Quesadillas, Fresh Atlantic Salmon, Blackened Shrimp Alfredo, and hearty Steak Tacos — dishes that consistently draw repeat visitors from across the greater Des Moines area. The French Dip and Creole entrées have earned loyal followings, while the daily happy hour specials make it a go-to spot for after-work dining in Urbandale.

Beyond the food, the atmosphere is what keeps people coming back. Warm interior spaces, a cozy fireplace seating area, and a well-stocked bar create an inviting ambiance perfect for date nights, birthday celebrations, or casual family dinners. Full-service catering is also available for home, office, and private events throughout the Des Moines metro.
