Lance and Ellie's: A Sandwich Stop Worth the Drive in Central Iowa

Tucked along Lincoln Way in Ames, Lance and Ellie's has quietly built a reputation as one of central Iowa's most beloved sandwich destinations. While technically situated in Ames rather than Des Moines proper, this charming spot draws hungry visitors from across the greater Des Moines metro area who know that truly great food is always worth the short drive north on I-35.

Lance and Ellie's embodies everything locals love about Iowa's independent dining scene — unpretentious, generous, and rooted in genuine hospitality. The kind of place where regulars are greeted by name and first-timers leave feeling like neighbors. In a region where Des Moines dining continues to grow and diversify, spots like Lance and Ellie's remind us that the best meals often come stacked between two slices of bread.

The Lincoln Way location offers convenient accessibility with straightforward parking, making it an easy stop whether you're commuting between Ames and Des Moines, exploring the Iowa State University area, or simply chasing down a sandwich that people can't stop talking about. The casual, welcoming atmosphere makes it ideal for quick lunch breaks, relaxed weekend meals, or feeding a hungry group without breaking the bank.

For Des Moines-area food lovers seeking authentic, locally owned dining experiences beyond the city limits, Lance and Ellie's delivers the kind of satisfying, community-driven meal that corporate chains simply cannot replicate. It's a proud example of what makes central Iowa's food culture so genuinely special.
